Arthur William “Mac”McCandless, February 24, 1925~March 23, 2014

Untitled-1Arthur William “Mac”McCandless, 89 of Fayetteville passed away Sunday, March 23, 2014 at his home. He was born February 24, 1925 in Michigan City, Indiana to William McCandless and Agnes Spang McCandless. He served in the United States Marine Corps from 1942 to 1946 during WWII and from 1950 to 1951 during the Korean Conflict. He earned a Purple Heart for injuries sustained in Inchon, Korea as well as a Navy and Marine commendation medal, Navy presidential unit citation, Navy unit commendation, Marine Corps good conduct medal, Select Marine Corps reserve medal, American campaign medal, Asiatic Pacific campaign medal, Korean service medal and a WWII victory medal. He was a member of the Military order of the Purple Heart as well as a Freemason belonging to Washington Lodge #1 as well a member of the Texarkana Lodge #341. He was a Woodman of the World youth leader for many years. He retired after 40 years of service with the state of Arkansas Employment Security Division. He enjoyed Hunting, fishing and spending time with family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Eugene, Norman and Harold and Sister Ruth. Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Josephine McCandless of the Home; daughter, Marion McCandless of Fayetteville; grandchildren, Weldon Orand and wife Jacqueline of West Fork and Victoria Stout of Goshen; five  great grandchildren and several other family members and friends.The family will receive friends Monday, March 31, 2014 from 10 to 11 AM at the funeral home. A funeral service will follow at 11AM at Beard’s Funeral Chapel with Chaplain Paul Woodhouse officiating. Burial will be at the Fayetteville National Cemetery under the direction of Beard’s Funeral Chapel. Online condolences may be made to the family at www.beardsfuneralchapel.com.

    What a joy it us to read of his military service. I am sorry that I did not know him while God allowed him to to be here on earth, I am confident that he is happy, alert and pain free right now.

    Our prayers go out to Mac’s family. Mac and I loved being Marines and were in Military Order of the Purple Heart together. We all loved Mac, he was a great man and a great Marine and will be missed by all.
