Culwell, ThelmaThelma Rachel Guinn Culwell, 93, of Fayetteville, passed peacefully Tuesday, December 5, 2017, at Morningside Assisted Living of Fayetteville.

Thelma was born December 4, 1924, in Winslow, Arkansas. She was the daughter of John Guinn and Grace Lehn Guinn. She was the youngest of eight siblings.

Thelma attended Huntsville High School and graduated from University High School. She attended Bethany Peniel College in Bethany, Oklahoma, for three years. She was led to the ministry to be a church choir director. She married Harold Culwell September 15, 1946, in Goshen, Arkansas.  While they attended college in Bethany, their only daughter was born.  Beverly Ann Culwell was born June 11, 1952. The family moved back to Arkansas in 1954.

The family lived at the Hathcock Clinic in Fayetteville from 1956-65 where they were caretakers. They owned Beverly’s Dari-ette on 701 N. College and later The Flamingo Drive-In on East 16. Later she worked at Kearney’s, Bear Brand Hosiery, Fayetteville Real Estate/Ottis Watson Construction and First National Bank; while working full-time, she worked part- time for many years at Campbell-Bell (a department store in Fayetteville).

Thelma was a hard-working woman. She loved her church, her family, her neighbors, her friends and her yard. She enjoyed gardening and helping others.

Thelma lived on East 16 for over 50 years. She moved to Morningside Assisted Living in August, 2015, for extra care.

She was a member of the Fayetteville First Church of the Nazarene and a former member of the Goshen Church of the Nazarene where she led music and taught Sunday School for many years.

She was preceded in death by her parents; four sisters (Violet Bernice Guinn, Joye Cooper, Gladys Harp, and Helen Watson); and two brothers (Howard Guinn and Omer Guinn).

Survivors include her daughter, Beverly Culwell Block and her husband, Kenneth, of Joplin, Missouri. She is also survived by one brother, C.L. Guinn, of Springdale and many nieces and nephews.

Thelma celebrated her 93rd birthday with a surprise birthday party at her home on Monday with her neighbors in attendance. She said it was one of the best days of her life. Two weeks ago she attended the Guinn Family Reunion with 65 in attendance. She did not have an easy life, but she never complained about working. She always commented she was so blessed. Recently she mentioned to several that she was ready to go to her Heavenly Home.

A celebration of Thelma’s life will be held at 2:00 P.M. Friday, December 8, 2017 at First Church of the Nazarene in Fayetteville with Reverend Larry Woodward officiating.  Interment will follow in Fairview Memorial Gardens Cemetery under the direction of Beard’s Chapel.

Miss Thelma was a lovely & gracious lady. I have only know her for a short time but she made you feel like an old friend when you were around her. My life is better for having met her. I enjoyed being with her because she showed Christ in all she said and did. Beverly & Ken, you will stay in my prayers for a very long time. God bless you!
