Brenda Moossy, 60 died January 29 at home, surrounded by loving friends.
Brenda was born January 21, 1949 in Gladewater, Texas to Lebanes-American
parents peter and Venus Moossy. A self-described “wild child” of the 60’s and 70’s, she
fled the University of Texas at Austin in an old van and joined the Blunderosa
Commune neat Red Star. Pregnant with her only son, Peter, she returned to school in
1975 and earned a degree as an RN. Some years later she finished her BA in English
and was admitted to the MFA Program in Poetry at the U of A in Fayetteville.
As an RN, Brenda specialized in Home Care, nursing and comforting AIDS patients
at a time when little was known about HIV, and as a poet she was equally bold,
publishing five well-received books and becoming a popular, dynamic performer at slam
poetry festivals across the country. She was founding member of the Ozark Poets and
Writers Collective and a member of the Radius of Arab American Writers.
Brenda will be remembered for her warmth, honesty, humor, intelligence,
independence, hospitality, generous spirit and wonderful cooking. She was one of the
most beloved figures in Fayetteville and will be deeply missed by her family, her many
friends, her dogs, and by fellow poets everywhere.
She is survived by her son, Peter Moossy and his wife Jennifer of Georgetown,
Kentucky, her two grandchildren Jacob and Eli, her brothers Robert and Victor, and her
nephews and nieces.
Beards Funeral Chapel and Crematory handled the cremation arrangements.
A celebration of Brenda’s life will be held on Saturday, February 7 from 4 to 6 PM at the
Fayetteville Town Center in the Mockingbird Room. All are welcome.
