LCpl Richard Rees Penny 21, of Fayetteville, Arkansas was killed in action on May
6, 2010, in Afghanistan. He was born August 6, 1988 in Fayetteville, Arkansas, the
son of Merv and Sharon Easterly Messender.
LCpl Penny’s personal decorations include: The Global War on Terrorism Service
Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal with Bronze Star
device, Combat Action Ribbon and Posthumously awarded the Purple Heart Medal.
He is survived by his parents of England (United Kingdom), his maternal
grandmother Ann Easterly of Fayetteville, one brother Jon McCard of West Fork,
Arkansas and one sister Jennifer Hall of Spain.
Services will be Saturday, May 15, 2010 at 1:00 PM at the Fayetteville National
Cemetery, with Msgr. David LeSieur officiating under the direction of Beards Chapel.
A memorial gathering will follow the service Saturday at Greenland High School
Cafeteria.
